Of Henley Hall, Shropshire, England, the son of Thomas Johnes. He was fellow of All-Souls College, Oxford and the Rector at Welwyn, Hertfordshire (1797-1852). A friend of Lord Brougham, he took the name Knight in 1813 having inherited property from Richard Payne Knight.
