The son of the legal writer Francis Hargrave (d. 1821); educated under Samuel Parr at Hatton, he was called to the bar from Lincoln's Inn in 1809 and worked at the House of Lords. He contributed to the New Monthly Magazine, and, impoverished, spent his later days at the Charterhouse.
