The nephew of French Laurence and Richard Laurence, archbishop of Cashel; he was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and St. John's College, Oxford and was rector of East Farndon in Northamptonshire. In 1834 he married Sydney, daughter of Sir Arthur Clarke and niece of Lady Morgan.
