Of Petworth; educated at Westminster School, he was an art collector and patron of J. M. W. Turner, a lover of Elizabeth, Viscountess Melbourne, and the father of four children by Elizabeth Fox. He is thought to have fathered several of Lady Melbourne's children also, among them the prime minister William Lamb.
