Educated at Charterhouse, Merton College, Oxford, and Trinity College, Cambridge, he was a classical scholar, Greek traveler, and author of Comicorum Graecorum fragmenta (1805). Maria Edgeworth described him as ”a tall, dark-eyed, fine, fashionable-looking man.”
