The son of George Augustus Henry Cavendish, first Earl of Burlington; he was Whig MP for Aylesbury (1814-18), Newtown, Isle of Wight (1821-30), Yarmouth (1831-32), East Sussex (1832-41), Youghal (1841-47), and Buckinghamshire (1847-57); he was created Baron Chesham in 1858.
